The picturesque whitewashed town of Salobrena dates back to the 10th century and is regarded as the jewel of the Costa Tropical. Built upon a rock on the edge of the Mediterranean sea, above the quaint cobbled streets with village houses adorned by colourful displays of flowers, Salobrena town is crowned by a Moorish Castle which sits 105 metres above sea level. The castle dates back to the 10th century with views that are spectacular. To the south the vista spreads across the sea to neighbouring towns of Motril and Almunecar, below the rock lie the tropical fruit trees and sugar cane fields and to the north the snow covered Sierra Nevada mountains. Salobrena old town is also home to the parish church which is built on the site of an old mosque and the museum where you can read about the fascinating history of Salobrena. Nestling among the whitewashed houses some delightful and atmospheric tapas bars and restaurants can be found, where tapas are still given free while you stop to take refreshments and watch the world go by.
Salobrena is a town of two halves where the old meets the new. Beneath the old town lies the new part of Salobrena where you will find more bars and restaurants, shops, banks, rental apartments and the tourist information centre.
Salobrena enjoys a lively cultural scene. During summer it hosts an abundance of outdoor shows and concerts many of which are held in the grounds of the castle. Like most Spanish towns Salobrena celebrates many national and local fiestas with firework displays, fun fairs and sometimes a local bull fight. Further details of activities being held during 2007 can be found on the Salobrena Town Hall web site.
