Los Guajares municipal district is located in the south of Granada province only 62 kilometers from Granada City. The district is composed of three whitewash villages (pueblos): Guájar Alto, Guájar Faragüit and Guájar Fondón. These towns are located within the mountain range that has the same name as the district.
Three hidden and almost forgotten towns, until recently a small road has opened them to the world. That is why they keep much of the ancient purity among whitewash houses, beautiful flowers, kind village people and dreamy landscape.
Guájar Alto is located at the end of the road that joins these villages with N-323 (the road that goes from Granada City to the Costa Tropical coastline.) Guajar Alto is named because of its elevated position in the Guajar mountains and benefits from spectacular views. Guájar Faragüit (hidden Jarden in Arabic) is the administrative center. All the district services are located here. Guájar Fondón is located close to the Rio de la Toba (Toba River) and is surrounded by numerous fruit trees.
Los Guajares location is perfect. These hidden small towns are located at only 45 minutes by car from Granada City and 50 minutes from it's International Airport. 20 minutes away you will find the beaches of the Costa Tropical and 1 hour away from Sierra Nevada (Snow-covered mountain range). The equally spectacular regions of Las Alpujarras and Lecrin Valley are located only at 30 minutes by car. This makes Los Guajares an accessible paradise.
CLIMATE
The climate is another charming aspects of this region. Los Guajares is located in La Costa Tropical (Tropical Seaside.) It is called "tropical" because the climate, vegetation, trees and water temperature are very similar to a tropical climate. The closeness of the African continent and Sierra Nevada mountain range make a subtropical microclimate that is unique in all Europe. Different circumstances have come together: latitude, soil quality and protection of the mountain range from the cold currents that come from the north all makes Los Guajares something like a gratifying sauna. A dry and mild climate all year round with 320 days of sunshine make it a perfect place to come and visit.
The average temperature is 25ºC, with minimum temperatures around 22ºC and 36ºC maximum.
HISTORY
Los Guajares comes from the Arabic word "Wa-run" that means steep or craggy. On the other hand, Faragüit means hidden garden.
Los Guajares first inhabitants were the Almhodes that lived in the Aquerías. When Los Guajares was conquered in 15 Century by the Christians, Los Guajares was divided. Faragüit was given to Luis de Portocarreno, Lord of Palma and Fondón, later, to Juan de Ulloa. There was a lot of repression against "los moriscos" in the area and the ones that were not killed were expelled. Later, Los Guajares was repopulated from people from other regions.
VEGETATION
The local tropical climate makes possible the growth of exotic vegetation and crops typical from tropical lands: chiramoya, mango, avocado, guava tree, papaya and olive trees can all be seen in abundance, medlar trees can also be found.
This climate also favors the flowers growth. It is common to see doors and balconies of local houses full of vibrant colors and heady smells.
Unlike many other regions of spain, in Los Guarjares everything is green color due to the lush vegetation throughout the mountain range.
