Salobrena, famously recognized by the impressive castle which stands 110 metres above sea level on top of the rocks overlooking the town. Along the Costa Tropical coast line you will find the ancient and very pretty town of Salobrena. By day, and especially by night, it is the most eye-catching monument on the stretch of coastline that runs from Malaga to Almeria. There has been a fortification at Salobrena since the 10th century. The Arab castle is a rare example of what could be produced when Moslem and Christian architects worked on a project together. Perhaps it is because such co-operation was rare, that this is one of the most visited monuments in Andalucia. The inner area combines the former Nasrid fortified palace and the outer areas served as military defence structures and were built by the Christians at the end of the 15th century, making it one of the most impregnable places on the Andalucian coast. The well tended gardens that surround the castle are in bloom throughout the year and the views from the castle walls across the fertile plains to the sea are spectacular. Nearby there is a history museum offering indepth and interesting facts about the castle and the town itself. Both the Castle and the museum are open to the public daily.
