STOP SUMMER DISEASES! By Jessica Morales Romero, Clinica Natura Vetinerary Practice, Salobrena
We must be careful about the different things that can badly effect our pets during the summer months, for example the sand at the beach, insect bites, spider bites, hot weather and poolwater, all hold hidden dangers. It is unpleasant but true, ticks, fleas, mosquitos and beatles always appear during the warm weather and can easily destroy a nice summer moment. If your pets are bitten check the bite area, making sure the wound it clear and clean, checking no inflammation or serious swelling appears, if it does call the vet immediately. Another tip is to keep an eye on your pet to prevent them playing with caterpillars. Many caterpillars are poisonous to cats and dogs causing inflammation to appear on their tongue, which in severe cases, can lead to death! As with us humans, the sun can be very dangerous for your animals and must be respected. Try to avoid leaving your pets in the car, even with a window slightly open to let in some air, the temperature inside your car can quickly become seriously high even if your car is parked in the shade, so much better to take your pet with you when you park the car, or leave them under shade at home. In the same way if your dog goes with you to enjoy the beach or swimming pool bring plenty of fresh water and a bowl so they can have a drink. If possible wet them from time to time, because they do not sweat and can therefore overheat, just like us, getting wet will cool your pet down. Remember if they are panting they are too hot! If you prefer to walk when the day is a little cooler close to sun set snakes are more abundant and active their bites can be a serious problem too so take care and be vigilant. For many summer pests like fleas and ticks etc your vets will have excellent and effective products to protect your pet, why not call in to your veterinary practice today and see what is available.
