Happy Health

Happy Health.  Written by Nicola Westby

Hi my name’s Nicola Westby I live with my husband and two children in Almunecar. I work as a therapist and counselor between Nerja and Salobrena. I work with clients who have experienced a variety of difficulties ranging from poor self confidence, relationship problems, parenting problems all the way through to stress disorders and phobias. Often the clients do not know what the cause of their problem is and during sessions I am able to identify the real problem and find a solution. I use a wide range of techniques and skills accrued over 20 years of practice in the UK and Spain.

I have also worked with a great number of people who have come to me because of their weight problems. Some have being overweight for a number of years whilst others yoyo up and down. They find all sorts of excuses and reasons for their overeating. I find I am able to get across to them the reasons for their behavior and up until recently I was not able to provide a framework for maintaining successful healthy eating habits, thus promoting weight loss. Having looked at all the various diets – and tried most of them myself, I found the only successful system was the Weight Watchers programme which I used in the UK. I was able to lose weight on other diets, however I found difficulty in maintaining the loss and so quickly gained weight again. Weight Watchers is more of a lifestyle change for lasting results. The only difficulty I found was there was no such group in Granada. So I am delighted to announce that after my successful training course, I will be hosting the new Weight Watchers Discover Plan right here in Almunecar starting in March 2009.

I am delighted to see a more active approach through the media these days promoting the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. We are lucky to live here in one of the best climates in the world with the possibility of enjoying a fresh Mediterranean diet. This climate allows us to enjoy a whole host of sporting activities, so why are so many people still carrying too much weight? The current TV advertising campaign in the UK is encouraging people to do more, eat less and live longer. This is a perfectly simple philosophy which we find difficult to do. Today the BBC reported 4 % of the UK population suffer from type 2 Diabetes. Figures have doubled within the last 10 years. This life threatening condition is a direct consequence of over eating and eating the wrong foods.

The growing evidence shows that if you are overweight you will be more likely to develop other health problems such as stroke, heart disease, cancer, gout, arthritis, sleep disorders or equally troubling problem of lying next to a snorer! When would now be a good time to take on your problem?

The Weight Watchers system allows people to eat and drink whatever they want in specific portions. There is never a need to feel hungry or feel deprived from your favourites. However the pointing system they use teaches us how to listen to our bodies and stay satisfied, whilst educating us on healthy choices. Weight Watchers make it easy by providing lots of different recipes to keep the food varied and interesting whilst using ingredients which are readily available from supermarkets here in Spain.

When you start to feel healthier physically, you will feel healthier mentally and emotionally as these two aspects of your life are intertwined and equally important. Remember eat less, do more and live longer (and BE happy)! Good luck!
